Πάγωσαν οι καταρράκτες του Νιαγάρα

Καθώς η φονική κακοκαιρία με τις πολικές θερμοκρασίες μαστίζει τις βορειοανατολικές πολιτείες των ΗΠΑ, οι καταρράκτες του Νιαγάρα μεταμορφώθηκαν σε ένα παγωμένο τοπίο προσφέροντας σπάνιο φωτογραφικό υλικό.

Οι καταρράκτες έχουν παγώσει σε ορισμένα σημεία, ενώ είναι αδύνατον να παγώσουν εντελώς λόγω του τεράστιου όγκου νερού και της διαρκούς κίνησης του νερού. Περίπου 3.160 τόνοι νερού περνούν από τους καταρράκτες κάθε δευτερόλεπτο με ταχύτητα 9.7 μέτρων το δευτερόλεπτο.

Οι καταρράκτες κινδύνευσαν να παγώσουν τελείως πέντε φορές στο παρελθόν όταν κομμάτια πάγου πιο πάνω στον ποταμό, δημιούργησαν ένα φυσικό φράγμα και μείωσαν τον όγκο του νερού που έφτανε στους καταρράκτες. Από το 1964 όμως έχουν τοποθετηθεί μεταλλικές δοκοί για να αποτρέπουν τη συγκέντρωση μεγάλων κομματιών πάγου.
